Still thinking about that one time back in 1997 when our party ventured into a massive, pitch-black cave system and got hopelessly lost for what felt like half the campaign. At one point, our Fighter decided to chase down a giant bat we'd nearly killed, just to finish the job. He sprinted into the darkness and immediately fell off a cliff.

Luckily, he rolled a natural 20 on his saving throw, so the DM said, "You stop falling. You're okay." The Fighter, who still couldn't see anything, begged us to throw him a torch. We did. It landed directly in the massive bird's nest the fighter landed in. The nest caught fire. So did he. Then he continued falling and died a very dramatic death.

Our Cleric could revive him - but since he needed to touch the corpse, our Fighter had to wait two more sessions until we finally navigated our way through the caves and reached him.
