20+ Workers who realized the customer was not always right: 'An unhappy customer? Oh no'

You only have to work a single shift in a retail environment to learn that the customer is not usually right. It's all well and good to want your workers to promote good customer service habits. After all, repeat customers are formed from positive interactions with the staff. But you can only take this "customer is always right" mentality so far. If the customer's meal is wrong, the employee should replace it with the right dish. But if the customer is screaming at the top of their lungs because their steaming-hot bag of French fries aren't hot enough, employees shouldn't have to accommodate that kind of behavior.

A lot of people seem to enjoy lording their power over retail workers. Maybe the customer's life just isn't going how they want it to, so they take out all their frustrations on that 17-year-old clothing store worker who can't locate a shirt in the back of the store. The customer gets to throw a fit over something like this — as if the employee can make a size L tee shirt appear out of nowhere — and they're often rewarded for their hissy fit by a manager who will soothe them and give them whatever they want. As long as managers put up with these over-the-top reactions, the customer will feel emboldened to do this again and again. At least, as some workers shared below, not every boss will just let a customer rant and rave: some will kick them out of the shop for good.
