    Daughter leaves her own graduation dinner after her father unexpectedly brings his new wife, Kim, despite her specifically requesting a dinner with just her separated parents and brother: ' I feel like he made it about proving a point'

    When a parent remarries, we think a common mistake their partners make is that a warm and welcoming seat within the family is expected, rather than earned.

    When someone expects children of divorce to run into the arms of their 'new mom or dad' before they even know their last names, a pile of complication and challenges always seem to arise. This is very understandable, many children struggle with the idea of picturing their parents with someone else, either in an unrealistic wish for their parents to reunite, or the sympathy they feel for the parent who's been 'left behind'.

    Whether the divorce was messy or your parents remain co-parenting besties, there are many milestones throughout their lives that require their parents to be under the same roof or seated at the table. And all that is wished for is comfortable and civil interactions to ensure the milestones remain the center of celebration and attention.
