Many parents may not agree with this take, but I don't think parents should force their kids to move out before they are ready to, even if it means letting them stay in their childhood bedrooms well into their early 20s. It may not be the most healthy approach, or the one that properly teaches these children independence, but I just don't think kids should ever hear the words 'you need to move out' come from their parents, no matter the circumstances.
So even if you have to wait a couple more years before you turn your 19-year-old kid's bedroom into a home gym, it is definitely worth it. Because the alternative – forcing your kid out of the house before they are ready, and have them resent you for it for the rest of their lives, does not feel like it is worth the extra room.
The mom in the story below has an even worse excuse for why she wants her daughter to move out of her room, which makes me even more confident that doing so will only damage the mother-daughter relationship.
