It's tempting to imagine a world that isn't our own. It's why billionaires build submersibles to go deep undersea. It's why other billionaires spend so much money building rocket ships to go to space. Because we want to know what the world is like beyond what we can see. On a side note, why is it always billionaires? I guess cause they're the ones with the amount of money necessary to fund these expeditions. But I'm sick of that.

Anyway, it's a human urge to want to know more about the world. We only know what we can witness with our two eyes. We know the topography of where we live. We know our spaces, our animals, and our relationships with other humans. But what would it be like if it was all different? This question can elude us. So if we're not billionaires, we turned to fiction.

We read books about fictional people, places, and ideas that teach us more about the world. We watch movies that put forth what it might be like on a different planet with a different species with different values. And we turned to the stuff not only because it satisfies our itch for curiosity, but because it teaches us something about ourselves. All good science fiction tells us something about the human experience. Or else we wouldn't find anything useful in it. The same could be said about memes. But that's putting a bit too kind of a point on it. They're mainly just here to make us laugh.
