Get everything in writing, otherwise people like this landlord can take advantage of you. Just ask the owner and employees of this one business: their landlord was ready to take everything they owned just so that he alone could benefit from the transaction.

Landlord and tenant relationships can be a mixed bag. Some people get along with their landlords. They get charged a fair rent, the landlord addresses any issues quickly, and the relationship is predictable and fairly normal. If you're lucky, that landlord will just show up when you need them, and leave you to your own devices the rest of the time (because having a landlord who searches for problems or bugs you all the time is also not ideal). Bad landlords can make you want to move ASAP: they annoy you about little issues, blow your phone up with texts, or raise your rent all the time for no reason.
