18 year-old hides dream-college acceptance letter from controlling mother who has made it clear she wants them to work in her cafe: ‘Every time I imagine telling her, I hear her guilt tripping me’

I suddenly feel naive for thinking that every mother—no matter how fulfilled or lonesome she may be— cannot wait for the day when her "perfect little Johnny" gets accepted into their dream school. She can finally brag about it to every Tom, Harry and Sally that stands on either side of her in Tesco's grocery aisle. It's hard to think that not every child would be bursting with excitement to finally show their mother that all their hard work and sacrifice have finally paid off.

However, I am slowly learning that maybe that's not the case for every graduate. Is it that our generation's children have turned into the parents? With the heavy weight of responsibility and expectations on their shoulders. Why do so many children hesitate to share their achievements with their parents—fearing it might trigger a sense of vulnerability or make the parent feel insecure about their own accomplishments? Or is it simply the need for an extra helping hand?

Well, this is the current inner battle circling inside the mind of the 18-year-old high school graduate. Are they making the right choice by hiding the acceptance letter from their dream school—the very goal they've been chasing since they were 15— just to spare their mother's feelings? Even though, deep down, they know they can't spend the rest of their life working in their mother's café.
