It sounds like Kayla had been having a rough year, especially when it came to keeping a job. According to the author, she wasn't exactly the most reliable employee, which is part of the reason why she wasn't inclined to recommend her for a job at her retail store. After all, the author didn't want to be held responsible when her roommate inevitably stopped showing up to work without warning. This, of course, led to a tense atmosphere in the apartment, which eventually blurred into the workplace as well.
