Hey there internet folk. We all have used pet names in some way, whether it's with our partners, friends, or family. My sister just had a baby, and we love calling her all sorts of names that aren't her actual name, like "monster girl," "piglet," and "the sweetness." In relationships, the use of babe and baby take high priority, but of course couples all have their own pet names. I've heard of things like dove, bug, pumpkin, chicky, just to name a few. And of course, when we have actual pets we always refer to them as our children.

I have a pet cat, and of course I call him my son, and I'm his mother. It's completely normal, even if aliens came down and wondered why we're so bonded to a species so unlike our own. Even within actual marriages the married couple will refer to each other as "mom" and "dad" if they have children.

In the story below, the protagonist is a man who's at a party with his wife and dog. He refers to his wife as "mommy" because it was in reference to their dog. Despite it being about their dog, it makes a party guest, a woman, deeply uncomfortable. She questions his use of the word mommy, and he only becomes more sarcastic with her.

This woman has no right to tell other people who they're mothers and fathers to. What if she said it to someone who has some sort of trauma with that? It would be extremely insensitive. She should think before she speaks.
