Accidentally Told My Girlfriend's Dad "I Love You" Now He Won't Stop Saying It Back???

So last weekend, I was leaving my girlfriend's house after dinner with her family. Super casual night tacos, a movie, good vibes all around. Her dad and I have always had

this polite, slightly awkward relationship, you know? Like, we nod at each other and occasionally comment on the weather like we're both NPCs in the same video game.

Anyway, I was tired, full, and feeling warm and fuzzy after she hugged me goodbye at the door. Her dad walks me out to my car again, super chill. He pats me on the

LIKE I WAS ON THE PHONE WITH MY MOM OR SOMETHING. He paused. I paused. The air shattered. And then, the man

smiled, nodded slowly, and said: "Love you too, buddy." WHAT. I drove off into the night with my soul in shambles.

Fast forward to every visit since this man now ends every single interaction with: "Alright, see you later. Love you." Sometimes with a wink. Once with a thumbs up.

My girlfriend thinks it's hilarious. Her mom keeps giving me weird looks. I don't know if he's messing with me or if I'm now unofficially part of the family in the weirdest way possible.

So, Reddit: • Do I own it and say "love you" back forever? • Try to phase it out? • Have a formal "we need to talk about the love thing" conversation?

Any advice or similar "accidental intimacy" stories would be much appreciated

Ashamed_Pen That is all green flags, her dad likes you and is making a joke of it, own it, express all the love!

Eli-schafer OP Right?? At this point, I feel like we're in a sitcom subplot and I'm the awkward but lovable son-in- law

justcougit That's really sweet. Does it make you uncomfortable? Presumably you guys will be family someday so it's fine lol

Eli-schafer OP Honestly? It did make me uncomfortable at first like secondhand cringe from. But now... I'm weirdly getting used.

Still, the wink threw me off. Not sure if we're bonding or if I'm being lovingly trolled. I guess you're right if things go the distance, this might just be the origin story of the weirdest, most affectionate in-law bromance ever

Divinee_Princess Exactly! OP stumbled into the most wholesome inside joke with his girlfriend's dad and honestly it sounds like the guy really likes him. This is peak family bonding and OP should totally roll with it. Just keep saying it back and enjoy the weird little tradition.

Eli-schafer OP it feels like we skipped five levels of bonding. so I guess that's a good thing

Notdone_Josh Dun Green flags all around OP lol. It's ok. He's messing with you and does love you. You must be treating his daughter well.

Eli-schafer OP Haha thanks thats good to know! it is amusing I guess I'll have to keep it up

Content-Purple9092 It's all good. It doesn't have to be awkward. I once said it hanging up the phone with a male coworker. I quickly added, "Not in a you now need to call HR way!" We both laughed.

Eli-schafer OP Lol that makes me fell better definitely glad I'm not the only one

Troglodytes_Cousin You should've just laughed it off. She like that happens to me often :-D Like I accidentaly called my mom or a colleage "my love", because thats what i call my wife every day :-)
  • 25
Eli-schafer OP Haha yeah I should've just laughed it off instead of freezing like I proposed or something. Totally get the autopilot thing though.

Slapnuts213 As a father, I can positively say he is messing with you but in a good way. Definitely means he likes you as a person and you must be treating his daughter right which is a good thing.

I seriously wouldn't sweat it from your end and once the awkwardness wears off h I start saying it to him again as a joke, will help keep the mood lightened. Now with him jokingly saying it though don't f his kid over or the love you will turn into a stay the f away.
