'You want me to log every minute? Sure thing, boss!': Micromanager enforces new time-tracking to policy to "optimize productivity," team maliciously complies to prove productivity would plummet

No one wants to feel like they are being surveilled during every moment of their workday. We should know all too well at this point that the secret to a well-run team is trust and mutual respect, not micromanagement and unnecessary stress. Unfortunately, there are still far too many people in positions of power who believe that the best way to keep both productivity and efficiency in a good place is to flex their muscles and create an atmosphere of tension.

Now, I'm not going to go out of my way to make assumptions here, but this type of thinking does feel inherently generational with people who have been in the workforce for decades internalizing a model of work that might not be as productive in reality as they might think. This also applies to the whole "pay your dues" mentality that so many folks with years of work experience seem to feel is necessary. Just because you had to go through something unfair and unnecessary, why does that mean everyone who follows you has to endure the same struggles? This new boss swooped in and decided that the best way to keep productivity up was to enforce a time-tracking system that, of course, ended up taking more time to complete than not having the system at all. This team proved that to be true, and, through malicious compliance, they were able to convince their entitled boss that maybe this wasn't a good idea after all. Thankfully, they just so happened to be dealing with someone who ultimately chose to listen rather than double down on the bogus new policy.
