Dobby is such a weird character. I understand why Harry Potter needed its own version of Gollum, but Dobby feels more like an annoying obstacle than an actual character I'm supposed to connect with emotionally. I feel like the Harry Potter fandom is pretty split down the middle on whether Dobby is a stupid distraction or if he's one of the most impactful characters. My take is that his passing was the best thing that could've happened to him in terms of his fandom standing. Imagine if Dobby got to live, forcing Rowling to nix another character like Ron or Hagrid? That would've been a horrible fate.
My biggest Dobby/House Elf hot take is that the sock rule is stupid because I don't think Lucius Malfoy was washing his socks. You're telling me the Malfoys have a house elf, but they also pay a servant to launder their socks? If you also have Dobby-based grievances, these Harry Potter memes won't force you to look at his face for too long.
