16-year-old tricks 26-year-old aunt into admitting he was adopted, his parents lose their minds and go no contact: '[You were] manipulated by a teenager'

Never underestimate a curious teenager! Keeping matters secret from a kid can be justified when they are too young to comprehend the gravity of said secret. However, by the time they are 16 years old, they are able to not only intuit when something strange is going on, but they will likely be able to put two and two together.

In this instance, we have a couple who adopted their now teenage son but had yet to tell him that he was adopted. They planned to do it on their own time and would inform the rest of their family members when he was aware of the truth. What they didn't know was that this highly intelligent kid figured it out on his own. All he needed to do was confirm the truth with his aunt, who unfortunately fell for it.

Now, the parents are, of course, blaming the kid's aunt for spilling the beans when really they have no one to blame but themselves!

The most unfortunate part of this anecdote was that a family feud was sparked over it when at the end of the day, the people who should really be taking responsibility here are the parents. Not only did they underestimate their son's intelligence, but they also had a fractured relationship whether or not they would like to admit it. Clearly, if they hadn't, he would be comfortable enough to ask his parents directly if he were adopted. Instead, he felt the need to manipulate his aunt for answers.
