Parents leave 16-year-old home on her birthday weekend to study while they take her 13-year-old brother on a ski trip: 'You have too much homework'

Birthdays are as much or more about consideration and thoughtfulness as they are about any material goods or value. It's not about the price tag, it's about making someone feel appreciated. Usually, you'll plan something that this person enjoys and make the day or weekend (or month if you're my girlfriend) about them. For those of us who don't care much for this sort of thing, it doesn't seem like a big deal, but it's important that we consider how the other person feels and wants to celebrate these types of things. Normally, the best way to tell how someone wants to be treated on their birthday is to take note of how they try to celebrate you.

Sure, it's important for a teen to learn that as you get older, there will be responsibilities that you will have to attend to that might get in the way of—even prevent you from celebrating—life events like birthdays.

This type of neglect can be harmful to any relationship. Still, at 16 years old it can severely impact a teen's sense of belonging, especially given this is likely not an isolated incident.
But, these parents left this 16-year-old girl alone on her birthday to study while taking her 13-year-old brother on a ski trip to the mountains. This caused the teen obvious distress throughout the weekend and left her uncle at odds with her parents over the appropriateness of the whole situation.
