    Employee gets berated for sitting during 12-hour shift despite having a doctor's note, quits on the spot: 'I won't be in tomorrow. Or ever again'

    It's always amusing to watch a boss-employee relationship unravel over text. Nine times out of ten, it's the boss's fault, as was the case here. Sure, the employee got defensive in his messaging, but that was only because his manager was reprimanding him for having an injury and needing to sit on the job. 

    Soon enough, however, it became clear that what was really bothering the boss was that they had a problem with the employee in general and needed to assert authority over him. At this point, the employee wasn't going to let that behavior fly, nor was he going to his boss have the final word. As we know, tone can get lost in translation in writing, especially over text. While it would certainly be more ideal to have communication like this in person, the boss started it, so how could we blame the employee for finishing it?

      Text Message Today 7:20 PM Good evening Me I was reviewing the cameras from our shift today and noticed that you were sitting on a stool for the majority of your shift. This is completely unacceptable behavior and we will be discussing it tomorrow before shift.

    • This employee worked a recent shift and had to be seated for the majority of it due to a recent injury. The lead manager during that shift had seen the note and approved it, so everything was supposed to be fine. In fact, it did not cause a problem with the employee's performance at all. On the contrary, he achieved the best performance of everyone else on that shift.

      Still, however, the proper manager took issue with this when they were reviewing the security camera footage from that shift. Clearly, they were looking for anything they could to scold this employee. That became apparent after the employee revealed that he had a doctor's note the whole time and the manager still took issue with the employee's accusatory tone. Never mind the manager's accusatory tone! Here's the rest of the text exchange!

      I cleared it with Lead I have 2 broken bones in my left foot (doctor documented). Aside from that - I packed 240+UPH for the entirety of my shift, 12 full hours. I'm not sure if you're aware, but we do have a ranked list for packing displayed directly above our stations. My efforts earned me first place today. So, just to be clear - my impressive performance was overshadowed by the fact that I wasn't uncomfortable enough while doing it?

      I'm really not appreciating your attitude. You could have just said the first part where it was cleared with another lead instead of being disrespectful. This type of behavior isn't going to get you anywhere here.

      Hey, thanks for wasting my precious off time with some garbage you didn't bother to investigate beforehand. Seriously - 240+ UPH - what you claim to be the pinnacle of performance there, I achieved it, and I get grief because I was sitting while doing it. You guys need to get your priorities straight. It is no wonder that you have such difficulties retaining staff.

      FiveAlarmDogParty - Worked in a factory where they had the ample room and ability to allow sitting, but refused to allow it. After months of quarreling they finally allowed "leaning stools" which, if you've never used them, are absolutely AWFUL for every part of your body. From low back to ankle, they're terrible. Especially when you attempt to use them as a chair, which is what these folks would do. Management then got annoyed with all of the PTO for surgeries/workers

      comp cases. So I said fck it - implemented chairs. Literally went out and bought chairs myself, on my own time and dime, and had my team sit and work. Numbers were great (steady) and workers were happy. Management even noticed saying the consistent numbers were being applauded and noted and said job well done. When I said “thanks! I listened to my team and they're all performing duties as needed with proper support" they took that to mean managerial support (any chance to S their own D) but I me

      Three weeks later they found out folks were sitting on the job and I was demoted and transferred and two of my crew were let go. They've never been able to replicate the numbers we got that month and there are constant discussions like "WhY cAnT WE fInD GOOD HEIP aNyMoRe" fck off. You had good help. My team was great. Y'all fu .d up over a chair.

      swistak84. I remember working for a corporate office. My team was first one in the entire decade long history of a company, that did the project, on time, within budget, and to spec. So I went to the office head and asked for the money for a pizza party to celebrate (it was Friday afternoon).

      I was told I can fill out form, then maybe next week. I said (I was paid a tons of money, and I could see he is doing it to be difficult, based on_multiple_similar interactions like those before), I just called pizzeria, ordered every pizza on the menu, told the guy to bring few pepsi with him, and if he happens to drop by the store on the way to us and grabs few six packs, there will be a great tip for him in it.       About half way through pizza, office manager comes to us, takes me back into open floor office and starts chewing me up in front of the half of the company. His argument was basically "(A) we have not approved it so you won't be compensated, and (B) other team leaders are complaining because we never let them make parties like those".       I never saw anyone genuinelly lost for words before. He was actually shocked by that response. I just turned back and went back to the party. I quit few months later, another couple of months my whole team was gone. Company went bankrupt 2 years later.
