The author sets the scene pretty specifically here. It sounds like things got bleak at some point during 2020, when the company went fully remote, and the lines between work hours and personal time were blurred. Expectations were high, and the author felt like he was constantly not reaching them. Finally, he left in 2021, hoping to never return… until he did.

The most unfortunate part about this poaching process was how easy it was for the company to bring this guy back. It sounds like the so-called “enticing offer” they dangled wasn't even fully set in stone. He probably should have known then that not much had changed at the company, certainly not as much as his new manager was claiming.
