How long must a father wait before introducing his child to the greatest trilogy ever made? My kids are finally old enough to understand the story, to cheer during Helm's Deep, and even to sit through the beheading of a particularly unlucky orc at the hands of Aragorn. So what's stopping me? Trauma. The trauma of introducing them to the MCU too soon.
I thought they were ready. I sat them down, popcorn in hand, and fired up Iron Man. Ten minutes later, they were on their phones. Half an hour in, they were bored. Bored! And now I have no idea when they'll be willing to give the MCU another shot. I'm not risking that with Lord of the Rings. Not now. Not with extended editions. Not with the weight of Middle-earth in the balance.
So I'll wait another year. Maybe two. Until then, I'll get my fix from memes—because if I can't show my kids The Fellowship of the Ring, I'll at least laugh at jokes about second breakfast and Legolas defying physics.
Here are 31 Lord of the Rings memes for those of us who still whisper "my precious" at anything remotely shiny.
