Using white noise to fall asleep is fantastic, having the relaxing accompaniment of a blanket of soft sound keeps out the dark thoughts and helps coax you into the dark void of nothingness that is a restful sleep. It's a game-changer for sure, and if you're a light sleeper it even helps you stay asleep by blocking out the small bumps in the night that might otherwise shake you awake.

The problem is you get so used to it and begin to rely on it, soon you almost can't sleep without it—in fact, you can't sleep without it. The quite literal silence without it is deafening.

People get attached to all sorts of types of noises to use as white noise: white noise, pink noise, brown noise; along with rain sounds, ocean sounds, wind sounds, bird noises, and different complete ecosystem ambiance. 

There are even some more out-there examples of things that people use as "white noise," and there have long been tons of jokes about using different things, even sparking some pretty popular memes on the subject online. 

This man claims that his wife has gotten hooked on using whale noises to fall asleep, which has escalated to him needing to vacate their bedroom to sleep so as to not feel like he's waking up to a reality where he has suddenly become Jason Statham in The Meg.
