When I first started reading this, I thought that it was dramatic of the protagonist to want to bring the in-laws to court for fraud and identity theft, but as I kept reading I realized the significance of what they did. If they're lying about why they need his SSN then there's definitely something fishy going on, and they might have already started something illegal.
