Why does anything you do for someone have to be reciprocal? Can't her husband just also help his sister-in-law out of the kindness of his heart? Why is it about owing favors, or making things “equal”? I think it's kind of a strange way to approach the situation. If he wants to help his SIL he should be able to, even if it's not about the taxes. I wonder if he ended up helping her, or how he feels about it. The protagonist sounds kind of jealous.
