The best kind of movie night is the kind where you know exactly what to expect. In an era of unlimited choice—where we scour 8 streaming services before choosing a movie to watch for the night—perhaps it's wise for couples to consider a tried and true story. Consult the dusty DVD collection and pull our that 4k extended edition of Lord of the Rings, because choosing any other movie will leave you supremely disappointed.
Nothing else has the same heroic fantasy of the downfall of tyranny at the hands of the little guy (literally). There are none quite like dear Gimli, stubborn but true, to inspire us to get a haircut. Nobody but Samwise Gamgee can pull off selecting their weapon of choice from the kitchen armaments. We feel a whole myriad of emotions when we watch LOTR and can always expect our woes to dissolve, replaced with uplifting hope that good triumphs over evil, the cutest rightful kings will take the throne, and no matter our struggles, we'll find safety and comfort in the Shire again at the end of it all.
Life is good when you pick LOTR for movie night, just remember that once you start the Fellowship, you're now legally obligated to watch ALL of the LOTR films.
