Cake is perhaps my favorite food of all time. Sure I love mac and cheese, I'd never turn down a good bowl of tomato soup, and the right Caesar salad makes everything feel possible. And don't get me started on dips (baba ganoush, hummus, artichoke… I'll take them all). But if I'm being honest, the most pleasure I've probably ever experienced from a bite of food is a forkful of birthday cake. Chocolate, vanilla, red velvet.. all valid. Better yet if it comes straight from a grocery store fridge.

Something about the cold, sweet frosting atop a squishy bed of sponge, just feels right. I think it's also because you rarely eat cake unless you're celebrating something. Or mourning something. There's usually a high emotional state associated with cake eating, so it heightens the whole experience. That or I'm just addicted to sugar and cake is my vessel of choice. Either way, I understand the phrase "take the cake."
