There is no easy way to fire someone. Just ask the people who hired George Clooney's character in Up in the Air.

The process of letting someone go at a company is only made simple when that employee has done something egregiously wrong. Otherwise, managers are often left grasping at straws and forced to cough up silly reasons for why so-and-so is expendable. More often than not, it wasn't even your manager's decision. They were probably forced to do someone else's dirty work in order to maintain their own job security. In short, it's a vicious cycle, and there is a reason why firing someone can weigh on the psyche.

Of course, at the end of the day, the person who is hit hardest is the one who's getting let go. Tell that to this boss, who chickened out so much that he could only do the firing from behind the keyboard of his phone…
