When we love someone, we want them to succeed. We want to be their cheerleaders, their confidants, and we are ecstatic to bask in their glory when they have something to celebrate. In contrast, nothing is harder than watching them in pain. This goes for friends, family, and significant others, and through both circumstances, through rain and through shine, we want to be there for them.

When it comes the time when we see our favorite person get belittled, we take it upon ourselves to stand up for them. It would be an honor to take the pressure off of them, to make the moment where they felt small completely disappear into obscurity, and we want to banish the person or thing causing them pain from their lives forever. 

Of course, it can't always work like this. Sometimes people don't want our help, and we have to believe that they know what's best for them. One woman went through that when she tried to stand up for her sister when her sister's boyfriend was mean to her, but it completely backfired.
