Grocery store boss flips out on employee, employee surprises him with 2 days notice: '[He] couldn't understand why'

You can often tell when a workplace is poorly run by the way a manager acts when an employee calls out. I know, it's annoying when you're a manager counting on five people for a shift, and one of them phones you up at the last minute to say they can't make it in. At many places, the staff are stretched so thin that having a missing person can make everyone's shift completely horrid. 

If the workplace is doing well, though, there's usually enough of a cushion to soften the blow if an employee needs to take a sick day. Maybe the place only needs five staffers per shift, but they add a few extra people to account for times like this. That's why it's so telling when a manager flips out on a worker for needing to take a sick day. 

The logic doesn't make any sense, either. If an employee tells you they're so sick they can't manage to work, why would you even want them in the store? They're either going to give everyone else the sniffles, or they'll be so visibly sick that customers will think twice about shopping there again. This happened to me once when I worked in retail, and even though I was terribly sick, I still had to go into work for Black Friday. I was just visibly unwell, weakly ringing customers up, and numerous people asked why I was there when I was so ill. I think it makes a bad impression on customers when they see an employee at work who really should be laying on their couch instead, sipping soup and watching daytime TV.
