I was there, Gandalf, 3000 years ago—well, more like 40, but close enough. I still remember standing in line with my dad, waiting to enter the theater to see Return of the Jedi for the very first time, surrounded by about 200 other sweaty kids and their equally sweaty dads. This was actually my first Star Wars movie. I hadn't seen the previous two because my parents thought I'd be scared of Darth Vader and the aliens, but now I was eight years old and ready. There was no way my dad could have known that this one movie would spark an obsession that would last a lifetime.
That day altered my tiny impressionable brain forever. When we got home, all I could talk about was Jedi, Jabba, Ewoks, and Stormtroopers. Over the next few years, my parents bought me every Star Wars toy they could find (some of which I still own). And now, flipping through Kenner's 1984 Return of the Jedi toy catalog is like stepping into a time machine, back to the golden age of action figures and playsets. If you were a kid in the 80s, this catalog is pure nostalgia fuel.
