There are benefits and downsides to being in a smaller family. One of the benefits I reaped was that I was rarely, if ever, demoted to sit at a paltry kids' table during extended family dinners or holidays. There might've been a kid's side of the table, but I cannot recall being segregated from adults and their conversations during meals. That was the way I liked it. I was the kind of kid who wanted to hang out with and talk to teachers supervising recess instead of playing with other kids. Unless there is a large group of children in a family who can carry on a conversation and behave amongst themselves or who would be so obnoxious that the adults around them couldn't hear themselves think, I am against the concept and execution of a kid's table. Kids should learn to have enough table manners to eat properly with adults.

With many kids' tables, the kids in question aren't mature enough to eat a meal together without being supervised. That necessitates a sacrificial adult who has to sit with them at their tiny chairs and tables and sacrifice their opportunity for adult conversation. The 25-year-old in this story was volunteered for that position but refused, causing some consternation in his family.
