I was never "cool." Or at least, I was never trying to be cool, because the whole thing just seemed ridiculous to me. It was obvious that what was considered cool today wouldn't be cool tomorrow, so why bother chasing it? Coolness was just a constant, exhausting race to conform to whatever trend happened to be in at that exact moment.
I remember one of my friends telling me I had to tuck my pants into my socks because it was "the style." So, like an obedient little 90s kid, I did it. I strutted around for six whole months with my jeans awkwardly stuffed into my socks. Then, one day, I noticed the cool kids had moved on. The pants were back to normal, and I immediately ditched the trend—not because I cared about being cool, but because it was uncomfortable as hell.
That's the thing about the 90s. We all had our moments. Some of us were rocking frosted tips, some were hoarding Pogs, and some of us (me) carried around a Rubik's cube at all times—not because I thought it was cool, but because I was convinced one day I'll solve it (I didn't).
This list is a time machine back to those ridiculous, wonderful days—from snap bracelets to Tamagotchis, dial-up internet to Saturday morning cartoons. Get ready to feel old (but in a good way).
