A close friend of mine just won the renter's lottery. After steeling himself to the high likelihood of renting an apartment his entire life, his parents befriended a mean ol' recluse in their book club. As he grew grouchier and more senile, this old man revealed that he owned property–a decrepit house–in the middle of the city and had no heirs to pass it on to and no friends to speak of. My friend, the guy who'd prepared for a lifetime of renting, was GIVEN this house under the premise of cleaning out the hoarder piles and the rats. To me, it seems like the score of a lifetime.
Some folks are just lucky to have no strings attached like that, but the woman in our next story wasn't so lucky.
