I've always had a philosophical issue with numbers. It's not that I'm bad at math (although, spoiler alert: I am), it's that the concept of numbers doesn't fully make sense to me. My mom loves telling the story of how she tried teaching me addition when I was a little kid. She lined up some apples and started explaining: "This is one apple." Sure, fine. Then she placed a second apple next to it and said, "Now we have two apples." That's when my brain short-circuited.
"Is it because they're next to each other?" I asked. My mom sighed, "No, it's just… two apples… together. That's just how numbers work. anyway, if I add another one it's three apples" At this point, I asked if I'd have to memorize all the new words for every possible combination of apples. She laughed; I did not. To this day, I struggle with the idea that "two" even exists. Either something is, or it isn't—1s and 0s. Honestly, the philosophers out there might agree with me.
