It's understandable where the mother is coming from, and that she wants to teach her daughter a life lesson. But I really don't think that will be achieved through punishments. It will only confuse and shame her, she can still act out as much as she wants.

If it were me, I would ask my daughter what's wrong, why she would do something like that. I would ask her if she wants to see a therapist, and how she feels about her father's betrayal that caused her family to sunder.
