    'I rescued a lost kitten': Feral momma cat comes back for her kitten 6 weeks after it was rescued, fearlessly waiting outside the rescuer's door

    Rescuing a kitten is an amazing thing to do. It's a heroic thing to do, and that's how we, here at ICHC, treat such a thing. To rescue a kitten in need is a selfless act, it's something that most people would not even think of doing, and it's pretty much always a good thing. Pretty much always. You do have to be careful. You do have to remember that this kitten that you want to bring into your family also comes from its own family, and maybe - just maybe - there is a momma cat somewhere out there, looking for its kitten. 

    This is something that we always recommend: if you're rescuing an itty bitty kitten from the street, do stick around for a little while and make sure that you are not separating it from its momma. Now, we don't know if the person in this story did this, but we do know that they did the right thing. This kitten needed help, urgently, and her mom coming back to look for her doesn't change that. It just means that this rescuer may have signed up to adopting 2 cats instead of one without knowing it.

    • Well, we don't know if we are the ones who should be informing you of this, but we think that you have two cats now. Sure, the momma is a feral, but she's only a feral… for now. Soon enough, the desire for food and cuddles and generally being spoiled will take over, and your little family will grow by one more.

      Big-Bit-3439 OP • 1d ago I tried to psps her, but she ran away. She only came back to look from a distance when I brought the kitty outside. She seems feral, but I left some food and water outside incase she visits again. Probably has felv, same as the kitty. 1.7K > Reply

      Big-Bit-3439 OP • 2mo ago Less than 24 hours since I picked her up and walked her home, she resisted a bit when I picked her up, but after walking away from the store she calmed right now in my arms. Gave her food and water when we came home which she basically inhaled in one swoop.

      Did a bath, dried her, shortened her claws and checked for fleas. She was very calm during everything and purred a lot. She is playful and will flop to her side to show her belly for scratches. She does this funny thing where she will make biscuits in the air. Right now she is sleeping on my chest and purring.

    • And do not doubt yourself, you totally did the right thing by saving the kitten. Yeah, for a second we did think to ourselves that maybe you should have looked for the mom a little bit longer, but nope, with all the health issues that this kitty has, you 100% did right by saving her. Because that's what you did. You saved her.

      Big-Bit-3439 OP • 2mo ago Long story short for anyone not following, I found a kitten outside a nearby grocery store a few days ago and brought her home. We went to the vet today and it unfortunarely turns out that she has felv. She is about 3 months old so still to young to neuter.

      Afterwards we went to climb trees so she could feel a bit of excitement after the scary vet, she was well behaved and cuddly during the entire ordeal though. Not really sure what to do now because I cant let her stay with my elderly cats and putting her up for adoption will also be difficult once people learn about her felv. I will do my best though.
