The user's MIL seems like she's always gotten her way using manipulation and fear mongering when it came to her son. It makes sense that she has always gotten her way—kids don't realize their parents' ways until they're in too deep.
However, the user refuses to let this slide. An older woman throwing tantrums and mean comments at not only her child but her child's wife is absurd, especially when they haven't done anything to target her or something that warranted those types of responses. I feel for the user's husband. You hope that one day, your parent will see the error of their ways and realize they have not done right by you. But, this story proves that not everyone comes to their “Eureka!” moment.
