This week we celebrated J.R.R. Tolkien's birthday—January 3rd—and if he'd kept the One Ring, he'd be a spry 133 years old. I'll admit, when I was younger, I didn't fully appreciate Tolkien's brilliance. For some reason, I had it in my head that he was a "bad writer with great ideas" (kind of like George Lucas). But to be fair, I tried reading The Lord of the Rings way too young, and all those overly detailed descriptions of food and scenery were a bit much for my kid brain.

It wasn't until later, when I gave his work another shot, that I realized just how genius Tolkien truly was. His world-building, characters, and yes, even the food descriptions, are nothing short of legendary.
