Any work email that begins with a "starting in the new year…" statement immediately fills most employees with paralyzing dread. For starters, most folks just got back from a relaxing and well-deserved break, and receiving an email enforcing new mandates feels doubly punishing. It's difficult enough to get back into the swing of things; to have to add new rules and regulations to the mix makes the transition back to work even more of a crying shame than it already is!
Now, onto the topic of this toxic workplace's incredibly frustrating new mandate: employee benefits and vacation days. Let us not forget that the sick days employees are entitled to should never be confused or conflated with vacation days. In fact, sick days are beneficial for both the employee and all colleagues unless bosses actively want their places of work to become incubuses. As for vacation days, most employees already have to endure a limited number compared to folks on the corporate or tech side. Removing the few days of PTO these people have is an easy way to lose your staff!

Here, we have an employee who discovered that at the start of the new year, she and her coworkers will receive a one-time pay increase of $0.80/hour (which, as her husband pointed out, ultimately amounts to just about $1,000 salary increase) as a replacement for all of their once-guaranteed vacation days. As many folks suggested in their reactions, this is absolute bogus!
Other folks in the online community chimed in with their reactions to this ridiculous unexpected change, providing suggestions for what this employee should do next.
