At the end of the day, the question isn't, “Is the other person being extravagant?” or “Is this situation unusual?” The question is, “Am I the bad guy?” and I think that in this situation, it's totally uncool for a grown adult to criticize an extremely generous gift that her teenager got in front of the person who got it for him. There are 5-year-olds who know that that is uncouth, and she should know better.
