In my view, some of the very best memes are those that have a little whimsy to them. Ones that in their own way, use a certain kind of artistry to reach their desired effect, whether that be through wordplay or some particularly clever referencing. Memes that are truly skillful often blend this creative impulse with an acknowledgment of their throwaway nature, making them bittersweet as well as amusing. It isn't that they always have to be this way; indeed, a lot of great memes are also extremely dumb. It is just nice to see somebody take some pride in the craft of making amusing internet images. In theory, it is something that anybody with some basic technical literacy can do, but in practice, it is not always so simple. That is another thing to think about when you are mindlessly scrolling, looking for the next humorous hit to tickle your fancy.
