It's best to buy gifts separately when you're relatively new to a relationship. When you really think about it, each partner doesn't owe each other's family any gifts. Of course, it's a nice gesture, but the arrangement the original poster (OP) and her husband had was quite normal. After being in a relationship for a longer amount of time, though—she really shouldn't be handling the Christmas present workload by herself. Financial aspect aside, finding the right gift for anyone, let alone your partner's family, can be mentally challenging. It seems like her husband just doesn't care about or understand the gravity of the situation.

Ladies are usually deemed more mature than their male counterparts, but that stereotype doesn't excuse ignorant behavior. Even after the OP vocalized her needs to her husband, it still somehow went under his radar. When you keep trying to change things and you get nowhere, at one point do you accept that stagnation is inevitable?
