If you’ve ever wondered why Whoopi Goldberg didn’t win Best Actress in 1986 for her incredible work in The Color Purple, it’s because the winner, Geraldine Page, was the Amy Adams of her time: always a bridesmaid, never an Oscar winner. Page had been nominated for seven Oscars before finally winning for her 8th nomination for The Trip to Bountiful. If she hadn’t won, she would’ve earned the record for the most nominations without ever winning. She didn’t win because her performance in The Trip to Bountiful was so much better than all of her other performances. She won because the Academy felt she deserved an Oscar after years of incredible work, and thank goodness she did. She wouldn’t have another chance to win because she passed away in 1987. Page had an impressive body of work, a laundry list of performances that went unawarded, and an advanced age that made the chances of getting another nomination uncertain. She was the ultimate Career Oscar winner.

And yet, people are still arguing about her Oscar because it was a career Oscar. Modern audiences are at least familiar with The Color Purple, but the majority of 2026 moviegoers have never heard of Geraldine Page or The Trip to Bountiful. Whoopi’s fame and notoriety have outshone Page’s, but there was no way of knowing that in 1986. Awarding Page felt like the only just decision at the moment. However, it’s hard to argue that the Career Oscar cemented Page’s legacy, when her work has been long forgotten, and the loser is often cited as the biggest Oscars snub of all time.

The Best Supporting Actress category at the 2026 Oscars has sparked debate over whether Amy Madigan’s nomination for her performance as Aunt Gladys in Weapons is a career nod. That is, if her performance was nominated because Madigan has had a long career that has long gone unrecognized by awards bodies. After all, she was last nominated for an Oscar in 1986 for Twice in a Lifetime, which is the longest gap between acting nominations for a female actor in Oscar history.

In my opinion, Madigan’s nomination has little to do with her longevity and everything to do with her standout performance in Weapons. If she wins, it will not be a Career Oscar. Although she has worked consistently, her work over the past 30 years hasn't resulted in any prestigious projects that would be in any awards conversation. It’s not as if she was going to get a Best Supporting Actress nomination for playing the mom in Field of Dreams. Weapons hasn’t even been in any awards conversations outside of Madigan’s performance. That, coupled with the fact that Weapons is a horror movie, a genre that is constantly ignored by the Academy, proves that her nomination is based on merit instead of Academy politicking.

It’s easy to say that someone doesn’t deserve a Career Oscar when the performance they won for wasn’t all that great. People are still arguing about Jamie Lee Curtis’ Best Supporting Actress Win for Everything Everywhere All At Once because it’s perceived as a win for a long career instead of an award-worthy performance. One might argue that her filmography consists of popcorn movies and that she was the least worthy nominee in her category, getting out-acted by her co-star, Stephanie Hsu. Even if you don’t believe that Curtis deserved a career Oscar, that’s what she got, and nobody can take it away from her! The Academy perceived her as an actor with an impressive, extensive body of work; it’s shocking that she hasn’t been nominated yet.
It certainly helped that she was nominated for her role in the 2023 Best Picture Winner, Everything Everywhere All At Once, which won seven Oscars, including three out of the four acting awards. It also helps that she’s the daughter of Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis, both of whom were nominated for Oscars but never won. But the perception that she was long overdue for major award recognition (her nomination for Everything Everywhere All At Once was her first) propelled her to the trophy. Either way, she’s not losing sleep about exactly what forces came together to help her win the Oscar. If anyone doesn’t care that they won a Career Oscar instead of an Oscar with no such qualification, it’s Jamie Lee Curtis

An actress over the age of 40 earning an Oscar nomination or win does not, in itself, warrant a Career Oscar. Olivia Colman was virtually unknown in the United States when she won her Best Actress Oscar for The Favourite in 2019. Many film fans claimed that Demi Moore’s only Oscar nomination for The Substance was a career nod, but that is untrue. Although Moore was the highest-paid actress in 1996, her career took a downturn in the following years and had never reached critical heights until her role in The Substance. The fact that she was one of the most famous actresses of the 90s certainly helped her get into the awards conversation, but anyone who says her nomination for anything other than her brilliant performance in The Substance is kidding themselves.

Career Oscars are very fun in the moment, but they often don’t age well. Hindsight is 20/20, and if past Oscar ceremonies were voted on today, maybe the results would be different. If we lived in a perfect world, every award would be given solely on the basis of merit. But if Oscars were given based on merit alone, they wouldn’t be the awards ceremony we all know and love. If you love underdog Oscars and newcomer Oscars and Meryl Streep Oscars and Historic First Oscars, you can learn to love Career Oscars for all of their flaws.
