Welcome, moms of the internet! Growing up, all we had was Santa. Of course, every family took the idea of Jolly Ole Saint Nick to different levels. Some parents simply put more Christmas presents under the tree while the kids were asleep. Whether or not your parents used different wrapping for "Santa's presents" depended on their level of commitment to the bit. Other families encouraged their kids to leave out cookies to find missing or chomped on in the morning. These holiday rituals were really only required to be observed on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, but kids these days expect a month-long performance from their parents thanks to the introduction of Elf on the Shelf. This Christmas tradition has websites and Facebook pages dedicated to providing novel ways to convince your children that their elves have come alive at night and committed mischievous acts on the days leading to Christmas. The pressure has been so great for some parents that they have been forced to throw the thing away and inform their children that he was "needed by Santa for a special mission."
