Load up on funs and bring your friends because Nirvana's MTV Unplugged performance, one of the holy grails of '90s rock music, aired 31 years ago on December 16th, 1993. That night, the world got to see Kurt Cobain, looking like he'd rather be anywhere else, together with Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic gracing that candle-lit stage. And with their usual rebellious manner, the band defied expectations by playing obscure tracks, David Bowie, Lead Belly, and other covers instead of their hits.
The performance has since become legendary, winning a Grammy and going multi-platinum. Not bad for a show where Cobain was reportedly battling stage fright among some of his other demons.
We can only imagine what those fortunate souls who witnessed it live feel like. Must be nice to have that card in music debates. "Oh, you think you know Nirvana? Well, I was there at Unplugged." Congratulations, you got eternal bragging rights over all of us. Unlike those lucky few, the rest of us get to analyze Cobain's every move and lyric for hidden meanings and relive the iconic performance through grainy footage and remastered albums. But hey! We get to make memes about it, you couldn't do that in 93' could you? Ha!
