Who knew that the tradition of hanging Christmas lights and decorating the exterior of your home would cause so much neighborhood drama? As someone who grew up in an apartment within a metropolitan area, this suburban madness is not something I inherently understood until I spent time in the suburbs as an adult. Let's just say it was a culture shock. Sign culture, flag culture, and Christmas lights culture are phenomena that are deeply strange and new to me, yet clearly, they can be the source of tension between neighbors.
Here, we have an older resident of a suburban area who recently lost his wife and who did not plan on decorating his home for the holidays, as it was too difficult for him emotionally since Christmas was his partner's favorite holiday. Unfortunately, that reasoning did not seem to satisfy the neighborhood Karen, who demanded that he decorate his home for her kid's amusement, believing it didn't matter how he felt during this difficult time for him. As always, Karens seem to shock and surprise us when it comes to their ability to simply not care about how other human beings think or feel. Well, thankfully, her comments gave this resident the fuel he needed to enact some malicious compliance and upset her as the Holiday season approached.
