Our protagonist chooses to bring cheesecake rather than the traditional pumpkin pie, seeing as she rather loathes the taste of the latter. Foreseeing that her daughter would choose a nontraditional dessert, her mother secretly bakes a pie with the sole intention of undermining her efforts.
