At just 20 years old, you're still fresh into your career. You've probably only had jobs that value hard work, like a fast-food job or a retail job. At those places, it doesn't often pay to schmooze with the bigwigs. You can chat up the floor manager all you want, but you're still going to have to sweep the floors and ring up customers, just like every other employee.
When you get into a salaried job, though, the game is totally different. It's certainly valuable to be the person who puts their head down and works hard day in and day out. But it's perhaps more valuable to be popular at your workplace. If you can get along with the bosses and your coworkers, you can easily do the bare minimum and still gain raises and move up into management. Some workers barely do anything at their jobs, but since they know the right people, they're breezing along the career path of their dreams. This person will hopefully learn to filter out what they say with a little more tact. They have plenty of time to learn!
