When you get married to someone or even just get into a serious relationship, there are a select number of topics that you and your partner unquestionably have to be on the same page about. Right at the top of that list is whether you want kids or not. There are few common experiences that will change your life as much as having children, and it is a major responsibility to share if you agree to do it.
Unfortunately, not every parent sees it that way. This is something that led one divorcing couple into a terrible situation. The husband had persuaded his ambivalent wife to have a baby for him, and the birth led to her having long-term health complications which meant she could not always care for the child. In retaliation, the husband asked to break up, but he wasn't happy when she only agreed to this on the condition that she would not have primary custody.
