This is a story from my childhood that is so classic 1980s it could have easily been a scene from a Rob Reiner movie. One day my friends and I were riding our bikes around our neighborhood (as one does during that decade). Since we lived in a fairly rural area, we came across two fields and decided to investigate a little closer. These were both pepper fields, one had all red peppers and one had all green. We really wanted to eat some but we didn't know what kind of peppers they were. I confidently declared that red peppers are chili peppers and therefore the green ones must be sweet.
Oh, how wrong we were. The second we bit into the green peppers our mouths felt like they caught on fire and we all started screaming and running around like headless chickens. We collectively got back on our bikes and pedaled back to my house, where my mom gave us all slices of bread and glasses of milk to ease the pain.
Now, isn't that just a classic 80s childhood story that would never happen now because there's no way I'm letting my kids ride their bikes to some unknown field?
