'You're just leaving your child to fend for herself': Unwitting parent learns neighbor has been driving her 10-year-old to school for 6 months, chews her out for undermining her parenting

Getting your child to school every morning is one of the top tasks of being a parent. It's part of the gig. You either have to do it yourself or rely on someone else in your community (a neighbor, a friend, a bus driver) to do it for you. That's why when they get to the age of being independent enough to do it on their own, it's a huge blessing. But what age is the right age, especially if the school is within walking distance? 

There's a Japanese show called "Old Enough!" that follows the journeys of Japanese children going off into the world to perform errands for their parents. It's a part of their culture. But over here in the States, the rules of independence for children are more slippery. Each family makes their own decision.
