Remote Learning Won't End the Traditional Snow Day if Parents Don't Let it

No government agency or public school system is going to be pro-shutting down schools for a day. It doesn't matter how popular snow days are amongst students. Snow days, when not properly accounted for, make schools lose money and teachers fall behind in their already packed lesson plans. The switch to a remote day of learning is a no brainer for the government, but I wholeheartedly believe American culture will keep the snow day alive.

Kids did not learn particularly well when they went online for school in 2020. But there was no better option, so that's what they did. There's a big difference between needing to do online school for more than a year because of a worldwide crisis and “needing” to do online school for a day or two while waiting for a winter storm to pass by. Parents will be far more willing to tell their kids that they can play hooky and enjoy the snow when their districts insist on a remote learning day, because they remember how fun their childhood snow days were, and they don't want to take that carefree joy away from their kids. Also, it's so easy to just not open a laptop. If you're one of the millions of parents whose kid's schools will be closed tomorrow, maybe you could help them keep the snow day alive.
