Death is not the most comfortable subject, to say the least. For most of our lives, we just push it to the edges of our consciousness so we're not confronted with it. We pretend that we will never die and that nobody we love will either. That is until they do, and then we're forced to reckon with it. All that to say, it's not something that most of us dwell on. So there's a certain taboo seriousness about it all. We're expected to treat it gravely (pun slightly intended) and humorlessly.
But what happens when people die who made us laugh? Should they stop making us laugh just because they're gone? The folks behind these gravestones certainly didn't think so. They made a commitment to bit, and they weren't going to let a quick trip down the river Styx stop them from making us laugh. So this spooky season, let's have some gravely serious laughs.
