Cats are independent creatures. They don't like confinement, they don't like being told what to do, and most importantly, they do like committing crimes. Seriously, cats commit crimes all the time. Cats steal food off our plates, right in front of our noses, with zero shame. Cats break into people's houses without a single care in the world, and then expect to be fed on top of their breaking and entering. Cats rob grocery stores, because if the sausages won't be brought to them, then they will bring them themselves.
So, really, this was the purrfect opportunity. Not only was this cat confined and being told what to do all day long, he also had a great opportunity to try out those prison break plans that he has been working on. The plans failed hilariously, of course, but you do have to appreciate the attempt and the courage.

Look. He tried. And we have to appreciate that. We don't know how he managed to escape. We think someone would have noticed Garfield moving across the room, no matter how quietly he might have been doing it. The most impurrtant thing is that he is back. Because this is good for him.
Yes. Yes, it's good for him. And laughing at him is wrong. We should not do it. No matter how funny it is. No matter how befuddled he looks in this caretaker's arms or how hilariously defeated he looks in that shoe rack. It would be rude to laugh. Being a chonky cat is not a giggling matter. It isn't.
